What information will the geotechnical engineer need for my project?

The geotechnical engineer may ask you the following questions:

bullet

Where is the site?

bullet

What is the current condition of the site?  The current condition of the site is very important in planning a subsurface exploration.  If the site is heavily wooded, for example, it may not be accessible to our truck mounted drill rigs.

bullet

What does the project consist of (i.e. what are you building at the site)?  If it is a building, how many stories is it?  How big is it? How heavy is it?  Knowing the magnitude of the structure helps the geotechnical engineer determine the number of borings needed and the boring's depth.

bullet

How much fill will be placed at the site?  This question is very important because fill can be very  heavy.  For example, 3 feet of fill is roughly equivalent in weight to a 2-story building.

Are there any site plans available? Site plans are crucial to locating the borings and can provide the engineer with useful information such as topography and the project layout.
